Hmmm...I keep thinking the obsession with individual identity has a right wing libertarian quality, so what FdB said about it chimed at my end. I think he’s talking more about an intersection between those ideologies rather than saying they’re equivalent. But obviously I’m not in his mind. And I’ve decided to identify as a tree from here on, so you’d better respect that or I’ll email your employers.
Seriously though, you convinced me this is worth talking about in a bit more depth. (The next essay is all your fault :P ) The intersection is misunderstood I think, driven partly by the long run misconception of what it means to actually seek ones self interest, and the notion that people seeking to take part in mass movements are being selfish instead of trying to find a way to sublimate themselves into a collective.
