I am a foreigner to the lands of Shotioul Me’Idhia. The customs and mores of its various tribes are unknown and confusing to me. I’m just a cave man wanderer aping the behavior of those around me. One thing, one tiny point of etiquette in particular, eludes me:
When do you “Like” things?
I am not trying to pull the sociologist move of pretending to be bewildered by every day phenomena, asking “Alcohol, is it good?” or “Hard work… could people really not like it?” I really don’t think I know how to do it.
Do I Like everything I don’t hate? If I fail to do so, does it imply I dislike it? If I like everything, does it really indicate that I like it as opposed to just doing the social thing with no meaning? Does it make “liking” something the equivalent of asking “How’s it going?” where if you actually go into depth telling me it is sort of strange?
Let’s poll!
I am genuinely curious here guys. I feel strange clicking little hearts like 20 times a day, and I don’t know if people are liking things what it means to me.
Is it weird I want a numerical rating on how much people like things? Like, -10 to 10, with -10 being “You should burn in hell for eternity, starting now!”, 10 being “Straight to Sainthood, baby.” and 0 being “Eh, good enough; not angry I spent life to read this.’
Needless to say, I don’t have a ton of experience with those little cards asking about being “liked” :P
I liked this post just to troll you. Did I truly like it? You'll never know muahaha!
More seriously though, I think in terms of determining whether people really liked a comment, you have to go differentially. A couple likes, meh, that was someone going through and clicking like as a sort of 'I read this' placeholder. A bunch of them? It was probably good.
In terms of actual posts, I generally judge quality by what's written in the comments rather than number of likes.
