I could just picture you getting overwhelmed with all the management! What's the solution? Be okay with selling less? Split or spin off part of the business?

I think pretty much yes, you grow until you can't grow anymore without extra people/business being negative marginal value. The trouble is trying to figure out where that is, even in hind sight. My guess is that most businesses just split or spin off when it is abundantly obvious they screwed up and can't continue to function as they are without collapsing.

I am reminded of how many Kickstarter campaigns become victims of their own success, either because they offered too many stretch goals or simply got too many customers. Sure, they pre-sold 2 million $, but actually producing that much was so far out of their capabilities that they fail in a way that selling 200,000$ would not have caused.
