That's a beautiful tool. Reading this makes me anticipate my autumn scything. There's a lot to cut this year, due especially to unusually extended summer weather, here in northern France. I'm holding off until the things that shouldn't be flowering stop and the pollinators lose interest.

Thanks man, that means a lot from a man who knows his hand tools! I find myself a bit surprised that the English bill hasn't really stuck around here in the States, outside of its cousin the sling blade in the south. I really like using the ax length bill for limbing trees instead of a standard ax, as it doesn't glance off the things and threaten my legs. It is comforting to know that if you put the thing even a little on target it will connect solidly. My great grandad would have had a few more toes with that benefit!

It's funny, we've had a long summer here, too. Normally I would expect to be done mowing the lawn by now, but I suspect I am going to have to give it one more pass at least before the grass beds down for the year. Making it worse, we've had a lot of rain the past two to three weeks, so I've delayed the last mow more than I would like because it is just too wet.
